Term 4: Week 6

The end of the year is fast approaching which means it is the last few weeks for our Year 8 students. There are some special events coming up for these students so the preparation is starting now!

Here are some highlights of what has been happening over the past fortnight.

Water Means Life Field Trip

Our Year 5 to 8 Enviro Teams had a out great day out today finding out where our water comes from and where our waste water goes...

Evie checking out the water treatment process at Te Marua.
Micheline and Bridget carrying out an experiment on how much chemicals are needed to effectively 'clump' the dirt together.

Heading to the clarifiers.
Dirty water is pushed to the centre while the cleaner water is push out and drained.
Underground where the water is filtered.

Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles! The backwashing process.
This is what's left over... sludge!
Good water at the top...
SLUDGE at the bottom!
..and more sludge!
The dry sludge, ready for the landfill.
The girls getting ready for the Waste Water Plant.

Yes, that's what you think it is! Man, what a stink!
Waste water getting treated with chemicals

This is the same process as the the clarifiers in Te Marua.
This bark is used to keep the awful smell away from the neighbours, amazing!
The water getting UV treated. Almost ready for heading out to Pencarrow and into the ocean.

Syndicate Sparks

Last week we started our Syndicate Sparks programme on Thursday and Friday mornings. This gives the students an opportunity to opt into an activity that best suits their interests or strengths. We are really lucky to have a couple of parents (Clare Leniston and Jane van Der Wilt) who have given up their time to work with a small group of children on art and craft projects. Also on offer is a cooking programme which is studying the history of bread making (yum yum), Visual Arts with a etching and printing focus, Physical Education studying personal well-being and fitness and finally a music and movie making programme using Garageband and other ipad apps. Phew! What a selection!

Moana Road Crafts with Jane:

Fantastic Felt Creations with Clare:

 Etching with Mrs Allen

Bread making with Ms Coton

 Physical Education with Mr Ranchod.

Music and Movie Making with Mrs Hooke and Mr Devenport

(We will hopefully have some music and movie to share next post!)

End of Year preparation for our Year 8s.

Our Abel Tasman adventure is just around the corner. Our home for the week will be a trusty tent! Before we get there its a good idea to have a go a pitching them.  Our first attempt was a bit challenging in the gusty nor-wester but we had some success!

Another way we celebrate the end of the Muritai learning journey for our Year 8s is with a special formal and prize giving in the last week. Part of the special night an opportunity for some formal dancing! Not too bad for the first go!
